October is special for many reasons. Leaves are changing, sweater weather starts, Halloween…  At Cronauer & Angelakis, it also means that it’s time to celebrate National Orthodontics Health Month. Created by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), this is the month that we promote orthodontic awareness in our community at various events and among our patients.

It’s no coincidence that we share this month with Halloween, as candy is one of the biggest culprits in broken brackets and popped wires. Here are some foods that trick-or-treaters who wear braces need to avoid:

  • Apples
  • Jelly Beans
  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn-Especially unpopped kernels
  • Hard Pretzels
  • Bubble Gum
  • Licorice

We know, that’s a pretty big list and rules out about half of the items in their bag, but they can still enjoy chocolate bars as long as they brush their teeth after eating them. If they do end up with damage from eating something on the forbidden foods list, be sure to schedule an appointment right away to prevent an extension of their treatment time.

Straight teeth don’t just look better; they’re healthier too! When your teeth are in proper alignment, you also reduce your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, headaches, earaches and erosion of tooth enamel. This October, help us spread the word about the importance of orthodontic health. Tell your friends about us today!
